Step-by-Step Installation Process:
1. Ensure the Windlass Is Ready
Make sure the windlass is securely installed, properly wired, and operational. Test it in both directions (deploy and retrieve) before proceeding.
2. Clean the Anchor Locker Thoroughly
Before installing the chain, clean the anchor locker completely. Remove any dirt, standing water, rust flakes, or old chain debris.
(A clean, dry locker helps prevent corrosion and extends the life of both chain and fittings.)
3. Prepare the Required Components
Get everything ready:
-
Calibrated anchor chain (DIN766, ISO4565, etc.)
-
Swivel and shackles (marine-grade galvanized or stainless steel)
-
A long, strong rope
-
A locker-mounted lashing point or chain stopper
4. Connect the Chain to the Anchor
Use a swivel and shackle to attach the chain securely to the anchor. Make sure all parts are tightened and secured.
5. Pull the Chain Onboard Using a Rope
Tie a strong rope to the end of the anchor chain, then throw or pass the rope to the bow of the vessel. Use it to pull the start of the chain onboard through the bow roller.
6. Secure the Chain Inside the Locker
Once the end of the chain is on the boat, use a shackle to fix it to the locker’s attachment point. This prevents the chain from accidentally dropping overboard during operation.
7. Use the Windlass to Retrieve the Chain
With the tail end secured, turn on the windlass and slowly feed the chain into the locker. Monitor its movement through the gypsy and hawse pipe to ensure smooth operation.
8. Raise and Secure the Anchor
Continue retrieving until the anchor is fully raised. Lock it into position with a safety pin or anchor lock to prevent movement when underway.
